Bodyguard Training

The definition of both is really the same except the word bodyguard dates back to the times of the Romans and Praetorian guards and the swordsman of feudal Japan. Where as Close Protection is a new meaning to the profession. From the SIA national occupational standards;

“A Close Protection Operative (Armed or Un-Armed) will provide a safe working environment to a principal (or Asset) whilst continually minimising and managing the risks”.

CTR Services limited can only describe both titles in the following ways:

Bodyguard

The Word Bodyguard has a global meaning which dates back to the very early years. The meaning now is somewhat media lead through movies, games and other media formats. However CTR Services sees this form of protection as the image field in that the training is exactly the same for SIA Licensing but the working environment is visible such as celebrity, Star, Dignitary and Foreign Royalty. So attributes towards the bodyguard will have to fit into the remaining synonymous with the position of the principal due to being in the public eye. Also when working with celebrities, the threat to the principal is not extreme, so that you will work one on one or at best in small teams.

Close protection

Now the term Close Protection Operative relates to a more intelligent subtle approach. You will be required to physically electronically and policy protect an asset whether person, building, information or reputation, from injury, damage or loss. This form of protection can be Overt such as a Bodyguard who will show as a deterrent or Covert in that you will blend in and adapt to your environment. The role of the close protection operative is to be the authority within the physical security sector and not just a physical deterrent.

CTR Services embraces this attitude towards our sector and thus has developed the Foundation Degree to exasperate the need for this new profession. From our experience of developing within the corporate arena we have found that our training has been well respected by our clients, and as such has enabled us to have a 6 year and more contracts. Welcome to CTR Protection Training Pages!
The industry in the UK and Overseas has seen a surge in employment over the past years, but it has turned on itself as with the growth of demand comes the growth of training providers seeing the training as a fast buck scheme. When we first started training in 2005 there was originally only 3 training providers CTR Services (us), Phoenix CP and Nemesis Group, now there are over 100 providers some offering the course for as little as £500 pounds for a 10 day course. This has like always pulled the standards down and what we have found is that some of the training providers are offering our courses and not only that they are using our power points, this undermines your training value as one student who left a course last year explained that he was taught our personal security and threat assessment in one day what we take three days to deliver. Even after reporting the said security college to our awarding body there is not allot they can do. This problem now rests with you the students as you should be asking certain questions and doing your due diligence to find the right training provider. 3 areas you should discuss are: 1 - Are you operational. 2 - How long have you been training students and 3 - What work can you provide. If you are considering a career in Close Protection then call us and arrange a visit to an open day in London to speak to our management team.
